Alternative Energy

Alternative energy sources are important for helping us create a sustainable world. Solar energy comes from using either photovoltaic panels or concentrated solar power. This technology changes the energy of light into electricity (solar panels) or uses the heat from the sun to run turbines. To generate electricity, windmills turn wind energy into kinetic energy, using new technology to create larger turbines that work better and produce more power. Hydroelectricity uses the power of shooting or falling water to turn turbines which is a technology already in place and now being updated to have less impact on the environment. The Earth’s internal heat is used with geothermal energy which can be harnessed to create heat or convert it to electricity by means of steam. One reason to resort to alternative energy is that it helps a lot in cutting down on emissions of greenhouse gases which are much higher when using fossil fuels. There are many successful examples from all over the world such as Germany’s strong renewable energy from the sun and wind, Costa Rica relying almost totally on renewables and Iceland making widespread use of clean energy from geothermal and hydropower. As a result, low-carbon energy systems can resist disruptions, keep pollution low and are more affordable due to assistance from the government and recent technology.
